I've been searching for a "true" simulation game for a while now and loved your ideas and goals. I guess I could do an IndieGoGo once I have a concise plan, although I prefer to offer a finalized product to a promise of one. If anything, I will be sketching what is the fastest way to make a city builder of this kind, so that it is reasonable from an economic standpoint. Sure a sandbox mode with simulation time control can be implemented as well with little extra effort, as an alternative mode.Īnyways, this is good talk, please keep the ideas flowing. Your citizens aging even while you aren't playing, money keeps flowing in, yet every time you open it up you can play for as long as you want, without reaching a "well these are all the actions I can do for now!" barrier. Or micro-transactions for packs of buildings that are worth it, that add variety to your city, but in no way are more or less efficient than others in their categories.Īnd lastly, I would be against timers to get things done, although maybe real time simulation could be an interesting (and unique, therefore selling point) approach to City Building - at least as an optional game mode. Probably a free entrance, with a one time payment to permanently unlock some stuff like bigger maps or more interesting buildings sounds good. I hate ads that break the immersion and interrupt my experience, even if it's to give me an in-game reward. I would definitely be against putting ads. It costs too much money to make one, people don't expect to pay much for it, and it's a rather niche market. I like it when picking between a more green or more industrial approach to a city has social consequences, not just pollution / economic consequences.Īs for monetization, this is a very important topic, as it is the main barrier as to why we don't get these kind of games on mobile. To put it in another way, have a little Tropico flavor to it. Naturally building a city is a key aspect of a City Simulator, and one needs to find the exact level of detail that makes sense for a touch screen device. Hello all! Thanks for the responses, all being very insightful, specially in the monetization model, which I'd like to talk a little bit further on below.įirst off, indeed I did not know of TheoTown, although I was aiming towards something focused more on the social and economic simulation (I've been always more interested in how my actions affect generations of citizens and the economy). It's a niche market, those of us who actually want to have a city living in our pockets.Įnough talk. The game would probably have to be paid at around $5, or free to play with aesthetic ploppable buildings, although that'd require the game to be more mainstream. That'd include road layouts (like SimCity BuildIt), a zoning or more organic approach to city growth, and the usual. I am writing this post to gauge interest in an actual City Simulator for mobile. I am a huge Sim games fan (specially old school Maxis), and it hits me that SimCity Deluxe is no longer available on the iPhone (terrible port anyways), and instead we have a FarmVille-dressed SimCity that looks beautiful, but has as much actual city simulation as a drunk pigeon. I am an indie simulation games dev, and as I am getting closer to the release of my current game on Steam, I've been prototyping other games I'd like to move forward with once my work there is done. Both are manufactured to last about 20 to 30 years. Where installing solar panels can cost an average of $3 per watt, installing solar roof tiles can cost between $3.80 to $9 per watt.Īs far as longevity goes, solar panels and solar roof tiles are about the same. In many cases, installing both solar panels and new non-solar roofing separately can cost less than an entire solar roof tile installation. Solar panels are cheaper to install, mainly because they don’t require a complete replacement of the roof. Solar shingles also lack many of the extras required with a solar array, as the mounting racks, brackets, and external wiring are absent. Tesla has only recently come out with new designs, like their Tuscan-inspired roof tiles, which have a dusty brown color and are shaped more like traditional roof shingles. They all tend to have the same look dark in color and completely flat. Granted, solar tiles are still limited in styles. They blend in better with the home, and passersby often can’t tell that the house even has an installed PV system. Solar shingles are more appealing to the eye. The major difference between solar shingles and solar panels are the aesthetics and the price. Some might see the switch as a worthy investment, considering they get a sleek new roof along with a reduced energy bill. They have a dark color and a shiny, sleek look. Many like solar roof tiles simply for the aesthetic value. Solar roof tiles are best installed on homes that are still being built, where the owner has complete control over the design and building materials of the home. Many solar shingles require completely removing the old roof and having it replaced, which can put off many homeowners. Those who already have expensive roofing materials might see it as an extra cost. Some homes might not be suitable with solar roof tiles. Solar roof tiles can be installed alongside normal roof tiles. Some manufacturers claim that their solar roof tiles are stronger than traditional roof tiles. Solar roof tiles have proven to be quite durable, being able to withstand strong winds and hailstorms. It’s important to remember that you’re not just getting a PV system, but a roofing material as well. Although they are expensive, some states offer tax incentives for solar installations, and you can also still take advantage of net metering with solar shingles, just like your would traditional solar panels. Installation costs can also be a huge additive, as solar shingles that require a complete roof replacement cost much more than those which are simply layered over existing roof tiles. The price depends on the manufacturer, system size, and type of solar tile. Solar shingles tend to be quite expensive. On average, they can cost between $3.80 to $9.00 per watt. Since not every part of the roof of a house faces the sun, solar installers might only place solar roof tiles where they will achieve the highest efficiency, while using similarly designed non-solar roof tiles where the sunlight doesn’t shine, as well as on the perimeters of the roof. Some are made with flexible semiconductor materials, while others are multi-layered and use traditional c-Si solar cells. Some can be applied directly onto existing roof tiles, while others replace the roof completely. This means they can achieve higher efficiencies and be more competitive with traditional solar panels. Whereas early solar tile manufacturers used flexible CIGS as a semiconductor, more companies today are utilizing crystalline silicon solar cells. The average size of a solar roof tile is 12 in x 86 in (300mm x 2180mm), and each solar roof tile can produce anywhere between 50 to 115 watts. The electricity is then used to power your home, either directly, or via a generator or system of battery storage. Sunlight strikes the solar tiles, and the semiconductor material converts light energy into electricity via a chemical process. Solar shingles work just like traditional solar panels, except the individual modules are much smaller. Source: Joy Yu How do Solar Shingles Work? Solar shingles offer all of the same protections as normal roof shingles, but they also generate electricity. Tesla is the most well-known provider of solar roof tiles, though other companies like Luma, SunTegra, and CertainTeed offer them as well. Solar shingles first became commercially available in 2005, and the market today has grown to encompass several companies and manufacturers. The Chinese zodiac is made up of 12 animals, starting with the rat and running through the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. In Malaysia, for example, the 15th day is known as Chap Goh Mei (15th night) in the Hokkien dialect and is when young, single women throw oranges daubed with their name and contact number into the sea in the hope it will be found by the partner of their dreams. The New Year celebration usually ends with the Lantern Festival although some countries have their own traditions as well. Lunar New Year only became a nationwide public holiday in 2002, four years after Soeharto was toppled. They were forced to give up Chinese-style names and their own language, and not allowed to celebrate the festival openly. In Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, millions of citizens of Chinese descent endured decades of discrimination during former President Soeharto’s repressive rule. Kumquat trees are popular – and auspicious – decorations to mark the Lunar New Year Vietnam also has its own zodiac, which does not include the rabbit, so it will celebrate the arrival the Year of the Cat. Vietnam calls the festival “Tet”, South Korea, “Seollal” and Indonesia, “Imlek”. Many cities around the region will be far quieter than usual. There are also raucous celebrations in Cambodia, even though it is not an official holiday there.īusinesses and government offices will close for seven days of public holidays in China and at least a few days elsewhere. The event is also celebrated in Taiwan, Mongolia, Vietnam and many countries in Southeast Asia – such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Well, expanding on that, Konradt also created Konstantin: an Alexa-type device dotted about LA, offering cryptic advice throughout. Turns out, we’re one of these “Numen” types and are destined to bring about the saving of the world, etc. No, instead we’re thrust into intrigue and superpowers, whilst a cabal of human/zombie hybrids led by Lola Konradt keeps tabs on us. If you remember, we are the fortunate survivor of a plane crash in the LA outskirts, only to be bitten and yet… still not turned into a zombie. So, now that I’ve given the disclaimer out: let’s talk about the story of Dead Island 2. Oh, and story spoilers for Dead Island 2, naturally. Polite warning: there will be pictures of, as well as descriptions of, gore and violence. So, without further stalling, let’s accept this weird invitation and find out how an apocalypse really makes people behave. Set in an opulent mansion away from the carnage, Haus is anything but as players find out what’s happening, and why heads are talking. Giving off a weird American Horror Story/Hostel vibe, Haus is a stylish-yet-bizarre addition to the madness of HELL-A. Now, several months after release, we have Haus: a story-based DLC set aside from the HELL-A main story. The colours, the vibe of self-awareness, and of course, the zombie killing, all tickled my sociopathic ways back in April. Well, that wasn’t difficult considering how low the bar was set with the first one, but still, it’s nice to be wrong. It would be fair to say that Dead Island 2 exceeded expectations. Is it worth the entry fee? The men in the group were telling stories, stories through which they could see themselves-not very different from what I did with my poems. It was my introduction to psychotherapy and I was immediately smitten. My ex-con supervisor invited me to sit in on a group he ran. Hungry for time away from the manicured lawns of my college, I signed up for a tutoring job at a nearby prison. But it was also the era of the glamorous suicidal poetesses-Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton-and with my consciousness so porous and my family having taken a turn into chaos, not a good time for me to spend countless hours alone, tapping out iambic pentameter and laboring in the basement recesses of an art library on the tenth draft of a poem. We were given assignments to write in various classic forms, and for the first time I received feedback on my writing. The workshop was all that I really cared about. My first year of college, I took a dazzling array of impractical classes: Buddhist philosophy, modern dance, a poetry workshop. The idea of an occupation was not on my mind-though I always assumed that I had to support myself and my taste for adventure.īy the time I turned eighteen, I’d worked as a cashier at Dunkin Donuts, as a research assistant for a guy with a stash of Victorian pornography and some shady financial dealings that landed him in federal prison, as the graveyard shift waitress at a diner renowned for occasional gunfire. What mattered was that work have meaning. LKG: I grew up in an intellectual family, where no one talked about work being lucrative. How did you not put your writing aside during the early stages of development, when most people stop in favor of more lucrative or immediately rewarding occupations? I was deeply attracted to mysticism and altered states of consciousness and wrote in a version of an ecstatic state, in the middle of the night. I didn’t have the idea that I wanted to be a writer until after college, when I found I was too shy to apply for anything but very unassuming jobs. Many artists speak of making the leap from never me to why not me-I did too, eventually. In college I stopped writing, believing that people like me weren’t real writers. (Later, The Dancing Wu-Li Masters was another favorite, mind-blowing book.) I vibed to stories of astrophysicists seeking contact with intelligences in outer space. I wanted to connect with something outside of myself through writing. As a teen I got more serious about it, and wrote lots of poems, and position papers for the school paper. I copied the ideas of books I loved-my first fan fiction-and wrote illustrated novels about wise talking bears and big families having adventures. I wanted to capture the feeling that books gave me, and that had to do with making a book as much as it did with reading one. There was the deadening blandness of suburban middle school-lockers and worksheets and jarring bells-and then the momentary glimpses of a midsummer’s night enchantment in the flickering light of a forbidden cigarette under a magnolia tree of the buried desires of a friend’s father as he ate his five o’clock dinner in his shirtsleeves and tie.Ĭan you tell me how and when you developed the desire to be a writer?Īlice Elliott Dark: I did start as a child. The world, I sensed, had many levels: there were the events skating over the surface and then the connections you might discover beneath. I still recall the awareness of something magical afoot in those early efforts to transform what was confusing and murky or painful or dull into something crafted and streaked with light. Lisa Gornick: Alice, we were both passionate child readers and, not long after, child writers-the two entwined as the inhalation and exhalation of breath. They wondered what it had meant to the other to have lived for decades with reading and writing so central to their days. Lisa Gornick and Alice Elliott Dark met a dozen years ago through the Montclair Writers Group, a group of women writers who have gathered regularly over the past quarter century to support one another’s work.Īs is the case with many writers, Lisa and Alice grew up with the practice of writing as a central part of their identities.
